GIBSON AUTO YARD

The Track Circuits inside the body of the yard tracks which protect the switch machines are not intended to protect or indicate a route is clear of obstruction. Equipment left standing inside the body of a track can clear the circuit and allow the switch machine to operate, even though the equipment fouls adjacent tracks

This has been the design since inception and should be part of the training process. The route board and the switch machine signal lights are indications of the established line-up; they are not intended as verification that said line-up is clear.
